With a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) standard in all but the XRS trim, the 2010 Corolla delivers the impressive fuel economy drivers have come to expect, but with a more responsive ride than most compact sedans deliver. EPA estimates put those mileage numbers for the 1.8-liter with a five-speed manual transmission at 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The Corolla’s controls are thoughtfully configured, and its acceleration, handling and overall comfort also are solid.
If you would like something just a little more assertive, Toyota offers the 2010 Corolla with a 2.4-liter DOHC dual-VVT-i four-cylinder engine that develops 158 hp and 162 lb/ft of torque. This upgrade is offered in the sport-themed Corolla XRS model, which also delivers sharper steering and comes with larger wheels and a front strut tower brace for more responsive handling.
