Preparing for the Fast Lane Again

Once known for its sleek, stylish sports cars such as the Supra and Celica, Toyota has dedicated more attention recently to the Truck/SUV and Crossover Utility segments. However, after months of rumors and rumblings, Toyota has unveiled the sporty FT-86 Concept vehicle.

Toyota's newest concept vehicle was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show last month. Inspired by the 1980s AE86 Corolla GT-S, the compact is the product of a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. The FT-86 has a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. Under the hood is Subaru's 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine which sends power to the rear wheels.

Designers at the European Design Development (ED2) center in France focused on keeping the weight of the vehicle down. This gives the driver better control and allows racecar-like handling. The profile of the FT-86 features an upswept body crease that starts at the base of the front wheel arch and flows back under the rear quarter window creating an arched effect for the rear wheels as well. The rear view of the new concept also reveals the full width rear taillights. Contributing to the exterior beauty is the new roofline that will allow for a 2+2 seating configuration and improve driver visibility.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the cabin is the stereo. The stereo head unit is hidden by a leather cover, but the function buttons are printed on the cover. The driver uses the stereo by simply pressing the buttons on the leather cover. For those who prefer to interact with the stereo in a more traditional manner, the cover is removable thanks to two zippers. The CD slot is also protected by a zipper.

According to Toyota, the new car will be smaller and sportier than the most recent Toyota Celica that ended production in 2006. The FT-86 is shorter in height and length but slightly wider. Dimensions such as the 101.2-inch wheelbase (1.2 inches shorter than the Celica) and 163.8 inch length should make the FT-86 a strong competitor in the sports car market.

The FT-86 is expected to reach the market in late 2011.

The Highlander Line-Up Receives Updates

The Toyota model line-up for 2010 contains an impressive list of upgraded vehicles.

Included in this list is the new 2010 Highlander.

The 2010 Highlander is available in Base, Sport and Limited grades in both two-wheel (2WD) and full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) models. The four-cylinder engine is standard on the Base grade with 2WD. All Highlander Hybrid models are equipped with 4WD with intelligence and available in Base and Limited grades.

Standard features on all Highlander models include air conditioning; front seats with height-adjustable active head rests and eight-way (10-way on Limited) adjustable driver's seat; power door locks and windows with auto-up/down feature; cruise control; multi-function keyless entry system; UV-reduction windshield and rear privacy glass; digital clock; dual sun visors with vanity mirrors and sliding extensions; conversation mirror; illuminated entry system; manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel; scheduled maintenance indicator light; full-size spare tire; and much more.

The base four-cylinder model now offers a power tilt/slide moonroof. Base and Sport models feature a standard AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers; Limited models offer an AM/FM/six-disc in-dash CD changer with six speakers, MP3/WMA playback capability and satellite radio capability. All audio systems are equipped with a universal mini-jack.

Sport and Limited grades feature a standard backup camera with a 3.5-inch, multi-information display. The display includes a backup camera monitor, clock, outside temperature, warning messages and cruise information that includes average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty, current fuel economy and trip timer. On models equipped with the optional navigation system, the backup camera's images are viewed on the seven-inch navigation screen.

In a segment where safety is at the top of purchase considerations, the new-generation Highlander’s standard active and passive safety equipment makes the vehicle a prime candidate. Highlander comes standard with a total of seven airbags. These include advanced driver and front passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags help to protect the occupants of all three rows in the event of certain side collisions or vehicle rollovers. Additionally, all Highlander models are now standard equipped with front active headrests.

All Highlander models come standard with Toyota's Star Safety System™, which includes enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA).

The safety system in the Highlander Hybrid couples Toyota's Star Safety System™ with the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. This more advanced system is designed to enhance handling, traction and braking systems that normally react to vehicle driving conditions by anticipating tire slippage before a skid, slide or wheel spin occurs.

Access to the third-row has been improved, not only by adding the Center Stow™ seat, but also by placing the walk-in lever at an easy to reach position at the bottom of the second-row seat. Standard on Highlander Sport and Limited grades, one-touch levers inside the cargo area allow the second-row seats to fold forward and flat.

2011 Toyota Sienna Wants To Be a Sedan: 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show

Poor So-So Pretty Good Good Excellent 7 Ratings LOS ANGELES — "Minivan" apparently is a bit of a dirty word to Toyota. The Japanese automaker rolled out its 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, emphasizing how sedanlike the redesign has made this people hauler.

The new Sienna goes on sale in February in the U.S. Pricing has not yet been announced.

"The third-generation Sienna will look and drive more like a sedan," Toyota said in a statement. The minivan has distinctly American roots, with its design a product of Toyota's Calty Design Research and its development taking place at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Among the highlights are a new, sporty SE model with side skirting, standard 19-inch alloy wheels, smoked taillamps and a sport-tuned suspension, as well as the debut of a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine.

Although the Sienna definitely still looks like a minivan, Toyota said it aimed for a "stronger profile" with the redesign. The Sienna rides on the same wheelbase as the previous generation, but it is wider and slightly shorter overall. The Sienna's face gets a slightly edgier look, and Toyota designers veered away from the minivan's classic boxy looks with a more sculptural rear. Toyota took pains to carve out personal cabin space for the driver and front passenger.

The Toyota Venza Combines Attractive Style with Great Capability

It appears that Toyota will not make any major changes in the 2010 edition of the Venza. This may be a simple case of “why fool with a good thing”—which the Venza most assuredly is.

Now, other than being a real good thing, there is lively debate about exactly what the Venza is: Is it a wagon? Not exactly, though it possesses the comfort and cargo room of the best wagons. Nor is it a crossover, though you will also see and feel the best characteristics and capabilities of those vehicles in the Venza.

Simply put, the Toyota Venza is something else—a trendsetter in family transportation. Far from being technologically simple, Toyota has tapped its most current and sophisticated design and engineering to deliver a truly unique and highly desirable vehicle in the Venza.

As for its size and power, the Venza sits comfortably between two of its cousins in the Toyota stable – 4.7 inches shorter than the Highlander, 5.5 inches taller than the Camry. Like its cousins, it comes with either a 3.5-liter V6 engine—which is the same on all three vehicles—or a 2.7-liter inline-four, the same as in the Highlander with a little less horsepower.

Spacious Scion xB Offers Frugal Flair

Called a “mini-minivan,” the latest Scion wagon is larger and smoother.

Rounded and resized in 2008 to hold more luggage and give its five passengers even more breathing room, the Scion xB (the largest of the three Scion models) gets a more powerful standard stereo – a Pioneer unit with 160 watts and a display menu – for 2010.

A 200-watt Alpine stereo is new, too, as is a removable navigation unit from Alpine, and both are optional. Scion excels in offering accessories that are timely and desirable to its youthful buyers; in fact, its portable GPS navigation units have reached the sophistication levels of much more expensive built-in navigation systems available in luxury cars.

The xB is well equipped at its base price. Other than selecting optional alloy wheels, there are few other options, save the electronics, that can substantially increase the xB’s base $16,420 MSRP. Standard at this price are antilock brakes, stability control, a manual transmission and airbags front and side. Optional is a four-speed automatic transmission, as well as a DVD player for the enormous rear seat area.

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma Pulls Away

Beyond their many practical work applications—hauling, carrying, pulling—pickups have a certain feeling and attitude, an undeniable allure. For their loyal fans, there is, quite simply, nothing like hanging your arm out the window of a pickup.

If you won’t be using your truck for heavy work or hauling, then the Tacoma with its base 159-hp DOHC Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing (VVT), 180 lb/ft of torque and impressive fuel economy is the way to go—a better bet than competitors including the Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier and Dodge Dakota.

The 2010 Scion xD Is Ripe for Customization

Compact xD hatchback doesn’t shortchange.

The xD is the smallest and least expensive Scion, a three-car division aimed at the young and hip. With four doors and an uncommon tapered hatchback shape, the xD doesn’t look as some others in the class.

Appealing touches such as the dimpled dashboard material are found throughout the xD (MSRP $15,470), which make it interesting to look at inside and out. The tachometer is inside the speedometer in a novel and stylish arrangement.

The little xD has a cost-saving solid beam axle, and also is equipped with antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (which shifts braking front to rear depending on the load in the car). Side airbags are standard, and it also offers stability control as an option. This is not your father’s bare-bones economy car.
