There are many men and womenwho do great things in our BatonRouge community day in and day out. Every once in a while we are given anopportunity to honor these amazing people! One of our own, here at Team Toyota, was honored this week by beingnamed one of the 2011 Marketer of the Year Honorees. Victorhas truly had an impressive career, contributing to several organizations andreceiving numerous awards forhis accomplishments. What is really impressive about this man though is hisinvolvement in giving back to our community. As you will see inthe following article written about Victor, he has contributed much to both Baton Rouge and Louisiana as a whole. We areexcited to be able to honor his efforts and know that there is only more tocome as Victor continues on with his careers bothwith CST and with us here at the TeamAutomotive Group.

Victor Howell enters histhird season with the Hornets as the host of Hornets Tonight, the 30 minute pre-gameshow on CST. He serves as sideline reporter during the CST broadcasts. Duringthe 2011-12 season, Howell will host the Monty Williams coach’s show on CST.

Victor is in his tenth yearwith CST, serving as host of the award-winning studio program CST Tonight,Saints Tonight, and CST’s Fantasy Football Extra. He’s also the color analystfor LSU basketball games on CST. In addition to his work with CST, Howellserves as the media director for the Team Automotive Group in BatonRouge and can be seen on air as the spokesperson for Team Toyota. This year he led a campaignthat raised over $2,000for St. Jude Children’s Medical Center, as well as a campaign that raisedover $5,000for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

A 1991 graduate of LSU,Howell spent 11 years at WAFB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Baton Rouge, LA as a sportsanchor/host/reporter. He was awarded the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award of Excellencefor Regional Sports Reporting (2001), Best Sportscast by the Baton Rouge Gambit(1999 & 2000), and Best Sportscast by the Louisiana SportswritersAssociation. He was also honored for Outstanding Contribution to High SchoolAthletics by the National Football League Foundation and Hall of Fame(1993-94), and was named a Top 40 Under 40 Baton Rouge Community Leader by The Baton Rouge Business Report in2000. Prior to transferring to LSU, Howell was a two-year letterman inbasketball at The University of Tulsa under Coach J. D. Barnett. The GoldenHurricane won the Missouri Valley Conference and advanced to the NCAATournament during his freshman season before losing to Oklahoma in the WestRegional. He was awarded the Leon Alvoid Award for outstanding team leadershipand sportsmanship following both the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.

The 42-year old Howellcontinues to be active with various fundraisingand charitable organizations throughout southern Louisiana, and during hisfree time, performed with the band LOUISIANA for 19 years andenjoys spending getaway time with his family. Victor and his wife Krystal haveone daughter, Kathryn.

As you can see, Victor hasbeen an incredibly busy person for the past 24 years of his life, but no matterhow busy life gets he always remembers what is most important; giving back. So from all ofus here at Team Toyota, we want to thankVictor for his unwavering devotion to stay involved and always put othersfirst.

Easy Peanut Butter Chicken Wraps

2 Tbsp. Skippy® Natural Creamy Peanut Butter Spread

2 Tbsp. Welch's® Reduced Sugar Concord Grape Jelly

2 Tbsp. nonfat plain yogurt

2 (10-in.) burrito-size whole wheat tortillas

6 ounces cut-up cooked chicken

4 slices cooked turkey bacon

2 romaine lettuce leaves

1 medium carrot, peeled and grated

1 small red bell pepper, sliced

Directions

1. Microwave Skippy® Natural Creamy Peanut Butter Spread with Welch's® Reduced Sugar Concord Grape Jelly in microwave-safe bowl at HIGH 20 seconds; whisk until smooth. Whisk in yogurt.

2. Evenly spread peanut butter mixture on tortillas. Top with remaining ingredients. Roll up and secure with wooden toothpicks. To serve, cut in half.

Preparing for the Fast Lane Again

Once known for its sleek, stylish sports cars such as the Supra and Celica, Toyota has dedicated more attention recently to the Truck/SUV and Crossover Utility segments. However, after months of rumors and rumblings, Toyota has unveiled the sporty FT-86 Concept vehicle.

Toyota's newest concept vehicle was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show last month. Inspired by the 1980s AE86 Corolla GT-S, the compact is the product of a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. The FT-86 has a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. Under the hood is Subaru's 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine which sends power to the rear wheels.

Designers at the European Design Development (ED2) center in France focused on keeping the weight of the vehicle down. This gives the driver better control and allows racecar-like handling. The profile of the FT-86 features an upswept body crease that starts at the base of the front wheel arch and flows back under the rear quarter window creating an arched effect for the rear wheels as well. The rear view of the new concept also reveals the full width rear taillights. Contributing to the exterior beauty is the new roofline that will allow for a 2+2 seating configuration and improve driver visibility.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the cabin is the stereo. The stereo head unit is hidden by a leather cover, but the function buttons are printed on the cover. The driver uses the stereo by simply pressing the buttons on the leather cover. For those who prefer to interact with the stereo in a more traditional manner, the cover is removable thanks to two zippers. The CD slot is also protected by a zipper.

According to Toyota, the new car will be smaller and sportier than the most recent Toyota Celica that ended production in 2006. The FT-86 is shorter in height and length but slightly wider. Dimensions such as the 101.2-inch wheelbase (1.2 inches shorter than the Celica) and 163.8 inch length should make the FT-86 a strong competitor in the sports car market.

The FT-86 is expected to reach the market in late 2011.

IMotor Oils: Unraveling the Differences

Which oil is better for your vehicle: synthetic or conventional? Before synthetic oils became available for regular automobiles, the argument centered solely on brand types and weight. But now, with the advent of synthetics all over the market, what is truly the best choice for your engine? Let's take a deeper look to find out.
Conventional oil is rated according to an SAE system. This scale is used so that you know what type of oil is best for your car given the environmental conditions of where you live. The higher the number, the better it is for hotter driving conditions.

Synthetic oils were previously used in many military vehicles and fighter jets. Airlines also use synthetics in their engines. More conventional synthetic oils have been designed to not break down as quickly. They can tolerate extremities in temperature and weather (hot to cold). Synthetic oils were first introduced to the consumer market in 1972 and have grown in popularity because of the superiority in protecting today's high performance engines.

One of the major differences between conventional and synthetic oils is that synthetics are treated with more additives that protect your engine for a longer amount of time before you have to change it. This treatment allows synthetics to last longer in hotter conditions resulting in greater protection against viscosity breakdown. Synthetics can last as much as three times longer than conventional oil.

Unlike conventional motor oil, which must be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, synthetic motor oil can go 6,000 to 10,000 miles between oil changes. Longer oil change intervals, means fewer trips to the lube shop or time spent underneath your vehicle.

Another major reason that many are choosing synthetic is that it contains fewer impurities; impurities that can cause your engine harm. With today's technology, the composition of synthetic oil is much cleaner. It has been proven to have a lower volatility and therefore not vaporize out the exhaust as quickly. So, for now, synthetics appear to be the more environmentally friendly choice.

Synthetics have also been shown to produce less resistance in the engine and therefore offer more horsepower and overall efficiency for the engine. This added horsepower in return means that the engine will be able to perform at the same level as before, but using slightly less gas.

Regardless of your perspective on oils, you should follow maintenance guidelines set forth for your particular vehicle. More performance oriented vehicles require synthetic because of the high heat that builds in these engines. Vehicles with engines that don't get exposed to extreme weather conditions can survive on conventional motor oil. Visit your local Toyota service center to inquire about your vehicle's oil requirements.

The Highlander Line-Up Receives Updates

The Toyota model line-up for 2010 contains an impressive list of upgraded vehicles.

Included in this list is the new 2010 Highlander.

The 2010 Highlander is available in Base, Sport and Limited grades in both two-wheel (2WD) and full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) models. The four-cylinder engine is standard on the Base grade with 2WD. All Highlander Hybrid models are equipped with 4WD with intelligence and available in Base and Limited grades.

Standard features on all Highlander models include air conditioning; front seats with height-adjustable active head rests and eight-way (10-way on Limited) adjustable driver's seat; power door locks and windows with auto-up/down feature; cruise control; multi-function keyless entry system; UV-reduction windshield and rear privacy glass; digital clock; dual sun visors with vanity mirrors and sliding extensions; conversation mirror; illuminated entry system; manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel; scheduled maintenance indicator light; full-size spare tire; and much more.

The base four-cylinder model now offers a power tilt/slide moonroof. Base and Sport models feature a standard AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers; Limited models offer an AM/FM/six-disc in-dash CD changer with six speakers, MP3/WMA playback capability and satellite radio capability. All audio systems are equipped with a universal mini-jack.

Sport and Limited grades feature a standard backup camera with a 3.5-inch, multi-information display. The display includes a backup camera monitor, clock, outside temperature, warning messages and cruise information that includes average fuel economy, average speed, distance to empty, current fuel economy and trip timer. On models equipped with the optional navigation system, the backup camera's images are viewed on the seven-inch navigation screen.

In a segment where safety is at the top of purchase considerations, the new-generation Highlander’s standard active and passive safety equipment makes the vehicle a prime candidate. Highlander comes standard with a total of seven airbags. These include advanced driver and front passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags help to protect the occupants of all three rows in the event of certain side collisions or vehicle rollovers. Additionally, all Highlander models are now standard equipped with front active headrests.

All Highlander models come standard with Toyota's Star Safety System™, which includes enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA).

The safety system in the Highlander Hybrid couples Toyota's Star Safety System™ with the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. This more advanced system is designed to enhance handling, traction and braking systems that normally react to vehicle driving conditions by anticipating tire slippage before a skid, slide or wheel spin occurs.

Access to the third-row has been improved, not only by adding the Center Stow™ seat, but also by placing the walk-in lever at an easy to reach position at the bottom of the second-row seat. Standard on Highlander Sport and Limited grades, one-touch levers inside the cargo area allow the second-row seats to fold forward and flat.

A Crowd Favorite: Cheesy Spinach Balls

Spinach and cheese are a popular combination in a number of dishes and these cheesy spinach balls are no exception. This is a family favorite at all of our holiday celebrations and parties. I make it for all kinds of events from our New Year's party to our Super Ball bash.

Here's what you'll need:
- 1 package of frozen, chopped spinach
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
- 1 cup stuffing mix
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine

First cook the spinach. Make sure to drain the spinach well to get all of the excess water out. If necessary, use a strainer. While the spinach is cooking, put the stuffing in a plastic sandwich bag and go over it with a rolling pin - the goal of this is to remove the lumps in the stuffing.

Once you have the cooked spinach and crushed stuffing, mix them together in a bowl. Mix in the cheese, butter and eggs. Once everything is mixed, roll the mix into small balls (the size of a large gumball). This recipe make between 32-25 cheesy spinach balls. Place the rolled up balls onto a paper plate and freeze. Please note, you MUST freeze them before cooking.

Once the spinach balls are frozen solid, you can put them in a plastic bag for easier storage. When you're ready to serve them, heat on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Check on them periodically as all ovens are different.

I love this recipe because I can make them a week ahead and heat them just before my guests arrive!

No Bake Dessert: Chocolate Peanut Butter Dreams

Chocolate and peanut butter go together like bread and butter, peanut butter and jelly, ham and eggs. It's a delicious combination in almost any form and these sweet treats are no exception.

This easy recipe does not require baking, instead you refrigerate the pan. This means you can make them any time before your party or prepare them before your party while you're oven is being used for the other dishes on your party menu. How convenient!

Here's what you'll need:

- 2 cups of crushed graham crackers

- 2 cups of semi sweet chocolate chips (12 oz bag)

- 2 cups of peanut butter (Peanuts Optional)
- 1 lb box of confectioners' sugar
- 2 sticks of melted butter

Mix the butter, graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and peanut butter. Spread the mxture into a greased 13x9 pan and press it in. Melt the chocolate chips and spread on top of the peanut butter mixture. Refrigerate for 30 minutes then cut into squares and serve.

Ten ways to ring in 2010

If you're like many people you're still trying to figure out what to do for New Year's this year. In honor of the New Year, 2010, we wanted to share ten ideas for how to ring in the New Year. All of these ideas can be pulled together in a short amount of time and will be a blast for you and your guests.

1. Game Night. Send a festive invitation to guets and use MyPunchbowl's potluck feature to add a new category: Board Games. Ask each guest or couple to bring their favorite board game. Put the name of each game in a hat and choose a new game throughout the night!

2. Black & White Party. Make your New Year's party unique by hosting a black and white party. Set the tone on your invitation and instruct guests to dress in variations of black and white only. Decorate using black and white tablecloths and dinnerware accented with gold, silver, or hot pink. Play classic black and white movies or project them on the wall for a cool effect.

3. Year in Review Trivia Night. Recap 2009 by recounting the year's pop culture and political highlights through a game of trivia. Complile a list of questions incorporating the past year's headlines as well as your own guests' milestones from 2009. Divide the party into teams and get ready for some serious competition!

4. Karaoke Party. Rent a karaoke machine and sing your favorite tunes all night long. Make each hour a decade (ie. sing 70s songs at 7pm, 80s songs at 8pm, and so on). You can make it even more interesting by choosing songs for other people who may or may not know the words.

5. Movie Night. Grab some popcorn and one of your favorite trilogies for a movie party. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, the Bourne Identity movies and the list goes on. Use pillows as extra seating, and don't forget the blankets! This is also a great option for a kid's sleepover party on New Year's.

6. Dinner Party. Choose a theme for your dinner party, such as "Taste of Italy" or 'Moroccan Nights" and focus your meal around dishes and delicacies from that region. If you host an Italian dinner party, for example, make sure to toast the New Year with prosecco, the Italian sparkling wine that's become an increasingly popular substitute for champagne.

7. Casino Night. Invite friends over for a night of cards and dice games. Try your hand at poker, bunco, rummy, or blackjack. Host a casual casino night or encourage guests to dress up as if they were in a fancy casino in Monte Carlo. Either way, your guests will have to play their cards to see what the night has in store.

8. Cocktail Party. Just because you're staying home doesn't mean you can't look your best. A New Year's Eve cocktail party is a great excuse to dress up! Serve martinis and champagne cocktails - maybe even hire a bartender - as well as passed hors d'oevres. Light background music and lots of mingling round out this New Year's party.

9. New Year's Day Brunch. Have as much fun on New Year's Day as you did the night before by hosting a brunch to ring in the New Year. Prepare big pitchers of bloody Marys adn mimosas in addition to standard brunch fare lik strata and French toast. Send guests home with goody bags filled with advil, bottled water, and a notepad and pen to jot down New Year's resolutions.

10. College Bowl Party. New Year's Day is a huge day for college football. Set up a large screen or projector and decorate with football-themed decorations. Make chili and arrange a tray of snacks and cold cuts. Make a list of the various college bowl games and have guests make their picks with prizes given to the winners.

Super Easy Artichoke Dip

Dips are wonderful for parties because your guests can enjoy them with crackers, chips, veggies or pita chips. And for you, the host, they're often very easy to make. So easy that you can often put out a few different dips for your guests to enjoy.

This recipe for artichoke dip requires only 4 ingredients and less then a half hour to make. It's near impossible to mess up so even new cooks can put out something that tastes great! A tasty addition to a holiday party, Super Bowl party, or any party where you want to include a warm, yummy dip to the menu.

You'll need these ingredients:

- 1 jar of artichoke hearts (marinated)

- 3/4 cup of mayonnaise

- 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese

- Dash of paprika

Chop the artichoke hearts into small pieces. Combine the artichoke hearts with the cheese and mayo. Pour the mixture into a small casserole dish and sprinkle with the paprika. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Serve with pita chips or crackers.

Tasty Holiday Party Appetizer: Crab Rangoon

If you're hosting a holiday party, it's often easier to plan a menu that includes a lot of appetizers and hors d'oevres. Also known as finger foods, these dishes are great for parties because people can enjoy them standing, with a glass in their other hand, and they don't need to sit down with a fork and knife.

Perfect for both casual parties and more formal affairs - you often see passed hor d'oevres during the cocktail hour at a wedding or bar mitzvah, for example. One recipe I find my guests really enjoy is crab rangoon. Surprisingly easy to make, here's what you'll need:

- 1/2 lb crab meat
- 1/2 lb cream cheese
- dash Worcestershire sauce
- dash tobassco
- dash paprika
- 1/2 tsp steak sauce
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1 package Wonton wrappers (approximately 2 1/2 dozen)
- oil for frying

Combine all of the ingredients except wonton wrappers and oil. Place a heaping teaspoon on each wonton. Gather the edges and seal with water (or an egg yolk with water added and beaten). Deep fry at 375 degrees for 3 minutes or until brown. Drain on paper towels.

You can freeze these if you decide to make them ahead of time. Just reheat them on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 15-30 minutes.

Winter is upon us, and winter driving comes with it. While safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to chilled air and winter driving that are a good idea to check into before we're knee deep in the season. To be sure you don't end up a road popsicle, or even worse end up with your holiday budget on ice thanks to unexpected repairs, have a look under the hood to be sure things are ship shape. As with any change of season, you should go to your regular maintenance log to make sure you are up to date on the maintenance items that should be taken care of throughout the year. The change of seasons is a great time to go through some once-a-year or twice-a-year auto maintenance tasks.

Winter Specific Maintenance

In addition to the added perils of winter driving, the change in weather can bring peril to your car's systems. Freezing temps, salted roads and wintery precipitation can gang up on your car if you don't give it a baseball-bat sized maintenance session. These winter maintenance jobs will keep you out of trouble:

Check your antifreeze
Your antifreeze (the juice that goes in your radiator) is an essential part of your car's winter protection. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is close to 50/50. Many service stations and repair centers will check this mixture free, or you can buy a tester for around $5. You did remember to perform a radiator flush last spring, didn't you?

Inspect your tires
The last line of defense between you and an oak tree are your tires. Winter is not the time to get cheap about your tires, so take the time to check the tread depth. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board says you need at least 2/32" of depth to be safe. It's been my experience, especially in winter weather, that anything less than 4/32" (1/8") be replaced soon. The old penny test is as reliable as anything to find out whether your treads are ready for winter action. Also, be sure to check your tire pressure. Believe it or not, they lose a little pressure when it gets cold, so pump 'em up.

Replace your wipers
Wipers? What do your windshield wipers have to do with winter weather? Two things. First, anything falling from the sky is going to end up on your windshield, and unless you have a team of beavers riding on the hood of your car the task of clearing it falls on your wipers. Second, in areas that see snowfall in the winter, you're also driving through that soupy muck that's left on the road once the highway department does their thing. This muck includes a lot of sand and salt, both of which end up on your windshield. It takes wipers that are in top shape to keep your windshield clean and safe.

Check your windshield washer fluid
You'll be using lots of washer fluid as you try to keep your windshield sparkly. A mile stuck behind an 18-wheeler will have your windshield looking like a Desert Humvee if you're low on washer fluid. *Tip: Don't fill your washer fluid reservoir with anything except washer fluid, it won't freeze!

Annual Maintenance Procedures
On top of the checks you need to perform to ensure safe winter driving, now's a good time to do some annual maintenance. These aren't necessarily specific to winter driving, but it's a good point on the calendar to get around to doing this stuff.

Clean your battery posts
Starting problems are a bummer any time of year. Regularly treating your battery to a cleaning can keep electrical gremlins at bay.

Inspect your spark plug wires
Cracked up plug wires affect performance, gas mileage and general reliability. Be sure yours are in top shape.

Inspect your brakes
Brakes are not a good area to cut corners. Be sure your brakes have enough meat left to get you through the season.

Check Your Engine Oil
This should go without saying and should be done at least monthly. But in case you're an amnesiac ... you should also do an oil change!

Cold weather safety should be a concern for anybody living in a cold climate. These tips will give you the upper hand when Old Man Winter tries to put a chill on your winter travels. We often overlook, in the smog of pride from collecting waste for recycling, that the principles of sustainability start with minimization. When minimization means doing without, acceptance can be hard to gain. But when minimization leads to elegance, everyone wins. Thus the green packaging proposal from Ryan Harc Design Studio -- the naked coke can -- is born a winner. If Coca-cola executives have not yet picked up the phone, they better move fast before Pepsi gets a lock on the idea.

What are the environmental savings of such a design? Could such a small thing as skipping the paint really benefit the planet?

Well, if coke could save five million dollars for five millimeters of plastic shaved off of bottle caps, one can only imagine. Based on Alcoa statistics for aluminum can recycling, over 112 billion aluminum beverage cans are sold per year in the USA alone.

Looked at another way, a report examining the potential coatings market opportunity for soy-based products estimates that 33 million gallons of coatings are sold per year in the US (2007 data). That is 33 million gallons of coatings that must be burned off, by thermal or chemical processes, before the aluminum can be recycled. Of course, the interior coating cannot be neglected because it performs a protective, rather than marketing, function. But that is still a lot of material which is serving little purpose other than to look pretty.

Real Market Potential

Unfortunately, the power to differentiate a product in the market means that Ryan Harc's design could be adopted by only one company, perhaps only for a single beverage line. Gizmodo put their pencil to the paper and calculates that over 75 billion cans of coke product are sold worldwide per year. If the Coca-cola Company restricted the new design to one beverage, they could still save paint on 24 billion cans per year of Coke Classic. And benefit from all the great, green marketing potential of the elegant naked can. Not too shabby.

Poor So-So Pretty Good Good Excellent 7 Ratings LOS ANGELES — "Minivan" apparently is a bit of a dirty word to Toyota. The Japanese automaker rolled out its 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, emphasizing how sedanlike the redesign has made this people hauler.

The new Sienna goes on sale in February in the U.S. Pricing has not yet been announced.

"The third-generation Sienna will look and drive more like a sedan," Toyota said in a statement. The minivan has distinctly American roots, with its design a product of Toyota's Calty Design Research and its development taking place at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Among the highlights are a new, sporty SE model with side skirting, standard 19-inch alloy wheels, smoked taillamps and a sport-tuned suspension, as well as the debut of a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine.

Although the Sienna definitely still looks like a minivan, Toyota said it aimed for a "stronger profile" with the redesign. The Sienna rides on the same wheelbase as the previous generation, but it is wider and slightly shorter overall. The Sienna's face gets a slightly edgier look, and Toyota designers veered away from the minivan's classic boxy looks with a more sculptural rear. Toyota took pains to carve out personal cabin space for the driver and front passenger.

The 2011 Sienna comes with a choice of two engines. The 3.5-liter V6 makes 266 horsepower at 6,200 rpm, with Toyota pegging fuel economy at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The 187-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is expected to deliver fuel efficiency ratings of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway. Both engines get a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Sienna will come in five grades: a base Sienna grade, LE, SE, XLE and Limited. Although the cabin doesn't leapfrog the competition in a dramatic way, it does offer some intriguing options. One of them is a rear-seat Dual View Entertainment Center, which uses two displays side by side to create a seamless 16.4-inch wide-screen image from a single source, said Toyota. The system can also split the screen into two individual screens, each with input from separate sources. It can be seen from the third row and can be operated from any seat.

Seven airbags are standard, and Toyota's new Safety Connect telematics system is standard on the Limited model and optional on the XLE model. All-wheel drive continues to be an option on the Sienna.

The Toyota Venza Combines Attractive Style with Great Capability

It appears that Toyota will not make any major changes in the 2010 edition of the Venza. This may be a simple case of “why fool with a good thing”—which the Venza most assuredly is.

Now, other than being a real good thing, there is lively debate about exactly what the Venza is: Is it a wagon? Not exactly, though it possesses the comfort and cargo room of the best wagons. Nor is it a crossover, though you will also see and feel the best characteristics and capabilities of those vehicles in the Venza.

Simply put, the Toyota Venza is something else—a trendsetter in family transportation. Far from being technologically simple, Toyota has tapped its most current and sophisticated design and engineering to deliver a truly unique and highly desirable vehicle in the Venza.

As for its size and power, the Venza sits comfortably between two of its cousins in the Toyota stable – 4.7 inches shorter than the Highlander, 5.5 inches taller than the Camry. Like its cousins, it comes with either a 3.5-liter V6 engine—which is the same on all three vehicles—or a 2.7-liter inline-four, the same as in the Highlander with a little less horsepower.

In keeping with its somewhat-this-and-somewhat-that backstory, the Venza is noticeably more roomy than a Camry, especially for your shoulders and hips. Likewise, it offers far more cargo space than its sedan relative, the Camry, with 34.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanding to about 70 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Where the Venza really carves out its own territory to shine is in the interior finish, which is superior in design and quality. The Venza’s center console with its simple and functional climate controls, its high-mounted shifter and multi-bin storage is both comfortable and extremely user friendly. It is an altogether well rounded and highly desirable vehicle.

The 2010 Venza will be offered in two trim levels (four-cylinder or V6), in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The base 182-hp 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder Venza will come with 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a steering wheel with both tilt and telescoping adjustments, auto on/off headlights, a power driver’s seat, rear privacy glass and a reclining and folding 60/40-split rear seat. Other standard features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, trip computer, universal garage door opener, and a six-speaker stereo with a six-CD changer, auxiliary audio jack and, new for 2010, a USB interface. The 268-hp DOHC V6 Venza will offer these features with 20-inch alloy wheels.

Available options include a power tailgate, a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, a rearview camera, a power passenger’s seat, HID headlights, leather upholstery and steering wheel, heated front seats, heated mirrors, wood trim—even a windshield wiper deicer. Other options include a voice-activated touchscreen navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system and an upgraded 13-speaker surround-sound audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.

Both the four- and six-cylinder Venzas will be paired with six-speed automatic transmissions with overdrive. The V6 will turn out a strong 246 lb/ft of torque. EPA-estimated mileage for the front-wheel drive V6 model is 19 city and 26 highway. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder will deliver 182 lb/ft of torque with EPA-estimated mileage of 21 city and 29 highway.

Generous standard safety features on the Venza include stability and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-seat active head restraints and ample airbag protection including front-seat side, side-curtain and driver’s knee.

Comfortable and easy to drive, the Venza has highly responsive handling and a solid and sure-footed ride. Its electric power steering offers good touch and road feedback, and you will be hard-pressed to find another vehicle of this size that is easier to park.

As mentioned, the Venza carves out its own niche when it comes to fit, finish and creature comforts. The intelligently designed and highly functional center console creates comfortable space and plenty of versatile storage. Audio and climate controls are user-friendly, and a well-placed LCD screen offers plenty of helpful information including trip computer, climate control and optional backup camera display.

The Venza does offer plenty of passenger comfort, especially in the rear seats, which recline nicely. Sample the comfort with a test drive. MSRP for the 2010 Toyota Venza begins at $26,295.

Spacious Scion xB Offers Frugal Flair

Called a “mini-minivan,” the latest Scion wagon is larger and smoother.

Rounded and resized in 2008 to hold more luggage and give its five passengers even more breathing room, the Scion xB (the largest of the three Scion models) gets a more powerful standard stereo – a Pioneer unit with 160 watts and a display menu – for 2010.

A 200-watt Alpine stereo is new, too, as is a removable navigation unit from Alpine, and both are optional. Scion excels in offering accessories that are timely and desirable to its youthful buyers; in fact, its portable GPS navigation units have reached the sophistication levels of much more expensive built-in navigation systems available in luxury cars.

The xB is well equipped at its base price. Other than selecting optional alloy wheels, there are few other options, save the electronics, that can substantially increase the xB’s base $16,420 MSRP. Standard at this price are antilock brakes, stability control, a manual transmission and airbags front and side. Optional is a four-speed automatic transmission, as well as a DVD player for the enormous rear seat area.

This latest xB is stretched a foot longer, and its roofline is lowered, giving it more of an angular look than the nearly square original xB, for which there was such a large assortment of accessories that two never looked the same.

The larger xB’s 158 hp 2.4-liter twin-cam four-cylinder (also found in the sharp Scion tC coupe) is willing and returns a respectable 22 mpg in EPA city testing and 28 on the highway. The new xB will launch quickly from a stop and get to 60 mph in less than nine seconds.

Gauges are placed in the center of the xB instrument panel, which works well for a number of small cars. Scion parent company Toyota has used this arrangement in small cars for years, and it quickly becomes habit.

Critics give the interior design of the xB good marks. Audio and climate controls are simple to find and operate, and they’re placed high on the dashboard, making them easy and intuitive to reach. Optional is colored interior illumination that also lights up the cupholders. In addition, colorful pedal covers are available, as they are on other Scions.

The xB is much softer riding on the highway than the original pre-2008 “boxmobile,” so it won’t upset the driver or four passengers. The calm and quiet driving manners of the 2010 Scion xB make a comfy place to listen to its cool audio systems.

What you need:

1 (13-ounce) can jellied-style cranberry sauce (sliced into ½-inch thick rounds)

Get cooking!

On a parchment paper-lined sheet pan, lay cranberry sauce rounds in a single layer and freeze for four hours or until solid.

Place one cup of flour in a shallow bowl. In another bowl, combine the sugar, salt, baking powder and the remaining flour; pour in the water and stir until smooth. Let batter sit for 15 minutes.

Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large Dutch oven to 375 degrees F.

Coat the frozen cranberry sauce rounds in the plain flour. Next, dip rounds in the batter and gently place in oil. Fry until golden brown, about three minutes. Transfer to paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Instead of basic rolls try:
Sweet Potato Bacon Biscuits (serves 10)

What you need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup mashed cooked sweet potatoes (cooled)
5 slices cooked bacon (drained and crumbled)
1 stick cold unsalted butter (cut into pieces)
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
¾ to 1 cup buttermilk

Get cooking!

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F and lightly grease a large baking sheet.

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add the butter using either a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.

In another bowl, whip the sweet potatoes with the brown sugar until smooth. Add the flour mixture, mixing it in lightly with your fingers. Add the bacon and ¾ cup of buttermilk, making a light dough (it’ll be slightly sticky) and add more buttermilk as needed, one teaspoon at a time.

On a lightly floured surface, pat the dough out into a large rectangle (about ½-inch thick). Cut into 10 large biscuits (use the edge of a drinking glass or a biscuit cutter) and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until golden brown.

Instead of mashed potatoes try:
Blue Cheese Mashed Potatoes (serves 4 to 6)

What you need:

2 pounds Yukon golden potatoes (washed and quartered)
4 ounces blue cheese (crumbled)
4 tablespoons butter
¾ cup heavy cream
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Get cooking!

Place potatoes in a large stockpot and cover them with cold water. Add salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and cook potatoes until tender. Drain potatoes well and return them to the stockpot.

Heat butter and cream until hot and stir in the crumbled blue cheese. Add sauce to potatoes and mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

Instead of green beans try:
Fancy Green Beans (serves 6 to 8)

What you need:

1 ½ pounds fresh green beans
½ cup red bell pepper strips
½ cup thin onion wedges
½ cup whole cashews
2 slices bacon
2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Get cooking!

In a small bowl, stir together honey, teriyaki sauce and butter.

Fill a large bowl with cold water and ice cubes.

In a large pot, boil water and add the lemon juice. Drop in beans and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until the beans are bright green. Drain beans in a colander and plunge them into the iced water. Drain again and set aside.

In a skillet, cook the bacon until it’s very crispy; cool, crumble and set aside. Sauté the onion and bell pepper in the hot bacon fat for two minutes. Add the beans, bacon and cashews to the skillet. Add teriyaki-honey sauce and toss gently.

There’s no reason to be under the weather when the seasons change.

Although the change of seasons is often greeted with cheer, there may be an underlying dread that accompanies the change. As people start to spend more time indoors, the likelihood of catching a cold or flu skyrockets. Fortunately, there are small steps you can take to lessen the chances of spending fall and winter sick.

Stock up on superfoods: Altering your diet can have a huge impact on your immune system. As David Grotto, author of 101 Foods that Could Save Your Life, writes, “Now, there’s really good research that shows foods can help with fighting virulent strains of bacteria.” Grab a bowl of soup packed with mushrooms and barley, which will help boost immune power with beta-glucan. Don’t underestimate the old-fashioned remedy of tea with honey; with high levels of antibacterial and antiviral polyphenols, tea and honey can help prevent sore throats and infections. Last, ward off sickness and bump up energy with unprocessed foods found in nature. Peppers, nuts, berries and sweet potatoes are all disease-fighting forces. If you like tomatoes, add a little olive oil to assist in the absorption of lycopene, an effective antioxidant.

Wash, rinse and repeat: Mom may have reminded you repeatedly to wash your hands, but now doctors and scientists are claiming that it’s the single most effective way to prevent the common cold and the flu. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend washing your hands for two minutes – but if you’re in a rush, go for a vigorous 20-second scrub. If you want to change it up a bit, wash with a boiled potato, which works just as well as standard soap and will leave your hands feeling surprisingly soft! Hand sanitizers work well for washing on the run, but make sure the active ingredients include ethyl alcohol, ethanol or isopropanol, and that the concentration is between 60 and 95 percent. Keep a small bottle in your car or purse, and be sure to send one along with your child to school – where germs are everywhere.

Sleep deep at night and stay active during the day: It may not be as warm outside or stay light as late, but staying active, especially outside, is an essential part of staying healthy. Put simply, there’s no substitute for fresh air. Rake the yard or clean out the garage to make more room for your car during the winter. Working up a sweat may leave you tired, but it allows your body to flush out toxins. At night, make sure you’re getting adequate sleep, as fatigue will make you more vulnerable to germs in the air. Try to stay on a schedule as well; it will make getting up in the morning easier – even if your alarm goes off before the sun comes up.

Of course, vitamins and herbs can work wonders to prevent colds and soothe the aches and pains of flu season. Watch your stress level, too; chronic physical or emotional stress can make your body much less able to fight viruses and bacteria. Excessive caffeine, alcohol and even central heating in your home can also dehydrate the body and weaken immune systems. Fortunately, the common cold and flu are preventable––many people swear that they’ve been able to ward off sickness year after year just by changing their diets or lifestyles.

So grab some orange juice and cook up a hearty vegetable stoup. If you treat your body right, germs may not stand a chance.

Fun and little-known facts about the Thanksgiving holiday!

After you gather around the table for a hearty Thanksgiving feast, impress your guests and relatives with some witty “Turkey Day” trivia! From the first Thanksgiving to the first Thanksgiving Day football game, here are some of the day’s unusual facts!

The first Thanksgiving feast, which lasted for three days, took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts in the fall of 1621. The meal, according to primary documents, is said to have consisted of deer and “fowl,” which many historians believe was most likely duck. Festivals to celebrate a bountiful harvest were a fairly widespread practice with variations occurring across many cultures. Pictures of Pilgrims with buckles on their hats or shoes are thought to be an inaccurate interpretation of attire. That type of clothing became popular later in the century. Though the holiday was observed many times throughout the years including by George Washington and routinely during Lincoln’s presidency, it wasn’t officially declared as a national holiday, to be held on the fourth Thursday of November, until 1941 – a full 320 years after the first Thanksgiving!

It has long been a theory among sleepy Thanksgiving feasters that an amino acid commonly known as tryptophan found in turkey meat is the culprit when it comes to all the post-feast tiredness. In all likelihood, the sleepiness is just the effect of digesting a big meal combined with a relaxed atmosphere that often includes a comfy couch! Scientific studies show that tryptophan, although sometimes converted by the body into melatonin - a natural sleep hormone - cannot have an immediate effect on you unless it is taken on an empty stomach, which, with all the trimmings, side dishes and desserts served up on Thanksgiving, isn’t likely!

Thanksgiving Day wouldn’t be the same without the game, but when did that tradition start? High school and college football games were a Thanksgiving pastime at least since the College Championships were held on that day in 1876! The first Thanksgiving Day radio broadcast of a National Football League game took place in 1934 in a contest between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. It wouldn’t be until 1956 that the Thanksgiving Day football game was first televised to living rooms across the country!

Preparing that Thanksgiving feast can be a real feat! According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest turkey ever documented weighed in at a whopping 86 pounds! The record was set in London, England on December 12, 1989. The turkey, a male bird or “tom” named Tyson, fetched an amazing $6,692 at a charitable auction! Imagine cooking that!

Leave room for dessert! The largest pumpkin pie ever made in the U.S. weighed 2,020 pounds fresh out of the oven! Baked in Ohio in 2005, the colossal custard was over 12 feet in diameter! It was served up in over 3,000 slices after baking in a specially built oven for more than five hours!

There are many tales of how the name of the large gobbling bird from the “New World” came to be called “turkey.” Although still somewhat a matter of debate, the most popular and probable theory is that when the large birds, which had never before been seen in England and Europe, were sent overseas, people associated them with another tasty large bird that had been traded to them before and had come to their tables by way of the country of Turkey. Thus, the bird was referred to as a “turkey.” Other theories include that Columbus, being lost and believing he was in India, mistakenly believed the large, colorful birds to be peacocks as they were a common bird there, and therefore called them by the Indian word for peacock, “tuka,” which admittedly sounds a bit like “turkey.”

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma Pulls Away

Midsize pickup is ready for work and play.

Beyond their many practical work applications—hauling, carrying, pulling—pickups have a certain feeling and attitude, an undeniable allure. For their loyal fans, there is, quite simply, nothing like hanging your arm out the window of a pickup.

Fortunately, today, there are more and better options for drivers who want the work capacity of a solid pickup, but with good fuel economy and handling characteristics—beginning with the Toyota Tacoma.

Part of its considerable appeal is that the Tacoma is available in a number of trims and styles—different bed lengths, engines and cab styles—that will fit almost any need, from bare-knuckles work truck to flexible family-friendly hauler. Its comfortable, well-designed interior and many available options make the Toyota Tacoma the first choice of more and more pickup lovers.

If you won’t be using your truck for heavy work or hauling, then the Tacoma with its base 159-hp DOHC Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing (VVT), 180 lb/ft of torque and impressive fuel economy is the way to go—a better bet than competitors including the Chevy Colorado, Nissan Frontier and Dodge Dakota.

The Regular Cab and Access Cab 4X2 models come with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic with overdrive. Either combination with the four-cylinder engine delivers an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

If you do need the extra power, then choose the 4.0-liter DOHC V6, which delivers 236 hp and 266 lb/ft of torque. This mill comes standard on the Double Cab with short bed and 4X4 drive. A five-speed manual transmission is optional (except on the PreRunner Double Cabs), and a five-speed automatic is also an available option. The V6 has some get up and go, too, taking you from zero-to-60 in about 7.8 seconds. Property equipped, the Tacoma Double Cab 4X4 can tow up to 6,500 pounds. Anyone want to go camping or fishing?

The midsize Toyota Tacoma pickup comes in a variety of configurations including Regular Cab, Extended (Access) Cab with its rearward opening doors and Crew (Double) Cab, which comes with two full-size doors. The Regular and Access models come with a standard six-foot cargo bed. The Double Cab comes with a slightly shorter bed, which offers improved maneuverability, although the six-foot bed is available if you need it. The optional 115-volt, 400-watt, bed-mounted electrical outlet is especially convenient for sports, tailgating and camping.

The Tacoma Regular Cab is the no-frills workhorse of the family. It comes with a standard limited-slip differential, 15-inch steel wheels, a composite bedliner and a utility-rail system. Inside the cab, you’ll find a bench seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, four-speaker stereo with CD and an auxiliary audio jack.

Choose the Access Cab and you will also get power locks and windows, air conditioning, rear bench seat, under seat storage space and six-speaker audio system. Step up to the Double Cab and you get keyless entry, driver lumbar support and upgraded upholstery.

Toyota has bundled its available options into attractive packages, beginning with the SR-5 model Tacoma, which comes with interior upgrades such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control and improved seating, as well as exterior enhancements. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road Package includes attractive fender flares and exterior chrome trim, 16-inch alloy wheels, a heavy-duty suspension, locking rear differential, sport seats and skid plates. Finally, the TRD Sport comes with a hood scoop, sport seats and 17-inch alloy wheels with sport suspension.

Toyota also offers some options separately including a Tow Package, rear park assist, cruise control, alloy wheels and an upgraded six-speaker audio system with in-dash six-CD changer, satellite radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Tacoma earned a top five star rating in government testing for front and side-impact protection, and it is the only midsize pickup to earn a top rating of “Good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its frontal-offset crash test.

All model Tacoma pickups come with antilock brakes with brake assist. Standard safety features also include stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags and front active head restraints. On 4WD models with automatic transmissions, Toyota has added hill-assist control and downhill assist control.

Best of all, no matter the size, trim or options that you choose, the Toyota Tacoma delivers comfort and performance, and looks and feels like the solid pickup it is.

You Might Need New Tires Sooner Than You Think

Easy tests tell you when.

Eventually, you’ll need new tires. Did you know that George Washington might be a better tire-wear tester than Abraham Lincoln?

There’s an old trick to tell when you need new tires: Hold a penny upside down in the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, you need new tires.

America’s first president, it turns out, is perhaps a better tire tester than the 16th. Place a quarter upside down in a tire groove. The distance from the coin's rim to President Washington's hairline is about a 1/8 inch. If you see more of Washington’s head than his hairline, get new tires.

Consumer Reports magazine cautions that you might need tires sooner than the penny test reveals, and that a tire with only a 1/8 inch of its tread left might not give you adequate hydroplaning resistance and snow traction.

The easiest thing to do is replace the tires with what came on the vehicle. Carmakers consider tires as part of the suspension system and therefore test them extensively for well over a year. Thus, “original replacement” tires can automatically restore your car’s ride and handling to showroom condition.

That isn't to say you can’t choose another tire. Consult Consumer Reports, for example, or have a quick chat with our service manager for suggestions. This is especially important if you are considering a tire upgrade – that is, perhaps something larger. If so, remember that bigger isn’t always better. A poor tire size choice can degrade ride and handling, possibly lead to suspension damage over time and worse, affect speedometer function.

By learning to “decode” a tire, you’ll be better informed when you buy replacements. The first place to look is the driver’s doorjamb. There, you’ll see a sticker with the tire specs; they’re a whole lot easier to read here than from a tire sidewall! You’ll also find the specs in your owner’s manual.

A number like P225/65R17 is the tire size. The “P” means it’s a passenger-car tire even though it may be used on many SUVs. An “LT” instead of “P” means it’s a “heavy-duty light-truck” tire, which you’ll find on many pickups and larger SUVs.

The number “225” denotes the tire’s cross-section width in millimeters. The “65” indicates the height or thickness of the tire sidewall. This number is a ratio of sidewall height to cross-section width. Therefore, “65” means the sidewall is 65 percent as high as the tire is wide. High-performance tires will have a lower ratio such as “45,” for example. That’s what “low profile” means. Continuing, the “R” means radial-ply tire, and the “17” is the wheel diameter in inches.

The load index indicates the weight the tire can safely carry. Choose replacement tires with the same or higher load index as those that came on the car.

The speed rating comes after the load index and is expressed with a letter. “S”-rated tires allow a maximum sustainable speed of 112 mph; “T” is for 118 mph. Performance tires will have an “H” (130 mph), “V” (149 mph) or “Z” (150 mph plus). Choosing a higher speed-rated tire can give you better handling even at legal speeds, according to Consumer Reports.

The higher the tread-wear rating, a triple-digit number, the longer the tire is certified to last. High-performance tires will generally have much lower numbers than some all-season tires.

The temperature and traction scores indicate a tire's temperature resistance and wet-stopping ability. For traction, AA is best and C is worst. For temperature resistance (how temperature changes affect tire performance), scores range from A to C. Certain performance tires may have a “low” rating of C because they are optimized for dry-road driving in warm weather.

The maximum pressure rating (expressed in pounds per square inch or PSI) is self-explanatory, but this is different from the recommended inflation pressure, which you should always follow. Your owner’s manual provides guidelines for the conditions that call for increasing tire pressure.

Finally, tires have a freshness date! Consumer Reports advises not to buy tires more than a couple of years old. Look for the Department of Transportation (DOT) number following the letters on the tire sidewall. The last four digits tell you the week and year the tire was made. For example, if you see “1509,” it means the tire was manufactured during the 15th week of 2009.

The 2010 Scion xD Is Ripe for Customization

Compact xD hatchback doesn’t shortchange.

The xD is the smallest and least expensive Scion, a three-car division aimed at the young and hip. With four doors and an uncommon tapered hatchback shape, the xD doesn’t look as some others in the class.

Appealing touches such as the dimpled dashboard material are found throughout the xD (MSRP $15,470), which make it interesting to look at inside and out. The tachometer is inside the speedometer in a novel and stylish arrangement.

The little xD has a cost-saving solid beam axle, and also is equipped with antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (which shifts braking front to rear depending on the load in the car). Side airbags are standard, and it also offers stability control as an option. This is not your father’s bare-bones economy car.

More equipment includes cruise control, power windows, locks and mirrors, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls – even split/folding rear seats. There are three levels of audio systems, a fact that points to the desires of the youthful market at which the xD is aimed, and all are naturally available with iPod connections and auxiliary input jacks. Beyond the audio head units, optional subwoofer speakers are available, and aftermarket companies have targeted the xD with accessories tailored specifically for it like special seats and racks. Some software makers have dedicated digital video skins and images to be used by xD owners to personalize their audio experiences on the audio systems’ organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

From the inside, the five seating positions are comfortably upright, and generous headroom makes the car feel quite roomy.

Driving the xD offers excellent acceleration. Its 1.8-liter twin-cam four-cylinder drives the front wheels through a smooth-shifting five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. With the manual transmission, getting to 60 mph takes a quick eight seconds, and the best part is that the EPA rates the xD at 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The manual transmission in the xD is often preferred, mostly because the clutch is easy to modulate and the shifter is linear and direct. Braking the xD is a treat – its rear drum brakes are quick and confident.

Scion has recognized that xD owners desire individuality and has provided accessories through parent Toyota’s TRD parts division. Larger wheels and tires with unique styles of spokes, ranging from 16- to 19-inch diameters are available for the xD. Pieces that make the shifter quicker, larger brakes, stiffer and shorter springs that lower the ride height and more expressive exhaust systems can be added to the xD with the factory’s blessing. Cosmetic additions such as engine covers, pedal covers and cargo area covers are also offered.

The variety of parts available makes the 2010 Scion xD seem like a canvas waiting for a creative painter. Is that you?

Don’t overlook your eyes when it comes to staying healthy.

In today’s digital world, it’s easy to take your eyes for granted. From televisions to computers, video games to highly evolved cell phones, we spend countless hours per day exercising – and exhausting – two of our most precious assets.

Whether you can boast 20/20 vision or rely on corrective lenses, eye care is equally important and often ignored. As we age, our eyes undergo many changes that can come with a long list of complications for our bodies, so keeping your vision sharp is a must. Fortunately, there are simple, easy ways to maintain healthy eyes.

Take a break from brightness: You’ve heard that reading under dim light causes eyestrain, but the reverse is just as true. Extremely bright lights, like the illumination found on computer monitors, can be too harsh for long-term use. Although the colors won’t be as vibrant, reducing the brightness on your monitor will help alleviate unnecessary strain. If your eyes still feel tired after a day on the computer, consider this: On average, the eye blinks at least 25 percent less than normal when focusing on a computer screen. Take a break every so often and close your eyes for five seconds, then turn away and focus on a distant object.

The other source of too-bright light is completely natural. UV rays can lead to cataracts, photokeratitis, snow blindness (a type of sunburn within the eye) and even certain kinds of eye cancer. Just as experts recommend applying sunscreen even during winter months, sunglasses should be worn all year. So whether you’re off to the beach or hitting the slopes, make sure you’re not only wearing some specs, but also check for a label that guarantees UV blockage.

Eat right for your sight: Research has shown that vitamin A deficiency is a major cause of childhood blindness (it’s no wonder mom was always telling you to eat your carrots). By upping your vitamin A intake with orange foods like papaya, pumpkins and more, you’ll not only have better night vision, but you can also help yourself avoid dry eyes and corneal ulcers. Another imperative nutrient is vitamin E, a powerful anti-oxidant for eyes. Vitamin E helps prevent cataracts and acts as an anti-carcinogen, so stock up on nuts and leafy greens!

Don’t skip your annual optometric visit: Even if your eyesight seems to be just fine, a yearly visit to an optometrist is always a good idea. A doctor can look behind the eye to examine the health of your retina – a multi-layered sensory tissue that lines the back of the eye. If the retina tears (which can happen without exterior trauma to the eye and without any symptoms), it often must be repaired to prevent it from detaching. Other conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure, can cause easily detected changes in the eyes long before any other symptoms are experienced. If you do rely on glasses or contact lenses, it’s important to make sure your prescription is updated annually. Wearing outdated lenses can cause headaches, eyestrain and even more serious damage. Contact lenses also need to be updated regularly. Many older brands of contacts do not allow enough oxygen to reach the eye. Your doctor can recommend and prescribe new lenses that are healthier.

Eyesight and eye health can change unexpectedly for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, small steps can make a big difference in keeping your peepers looking and feeling sharp – both inside and out. You only get one pair, so it pays to take good care!

Fans of the Toyota 4Runner are wondering, and anticipation is running high, as the company prepares to roll out the 2010 version of the stalwart 4Runner. This midsize SUV has gained a reputation as a solid performer. That won’t change.

Toyota will roll out a 4Runner for 2010 that looks every bit the solid machine its fans have come to know and love. The 2010 4Runner will continue to offer its well-known high ground clearance with relatively few new styling elements. Buyers can expect something close to the most-recent headlight/grille/hood treatment and squared wheel arches, but with an overall smoother geometric surface.

Other anticipated features include a smooth, improved suspension system, 20-inch wheels, a sliding cargo-area tray and water-repellent seats. Best of all, it’s anticipated that the base price for the 2010 4Runner will change very little from the price of the last model year.

Perhaps the most significant change for the 2010 model will appear under the hood where the 4Runner adds to its V6 engine offering a next-generation 2.4-liter four-cylinder in the base model and an available 4.0-liter V6 upgrade. The four-cylinder is expected to produce 161 hp and 184 lb/ft of torque while the more robust V6, with its Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for the intake and exhaust, will put out 268 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque.

It is expected that the 2010 4Runner will be available in three model levels: SR5, Trail and Limited, with the four-cylinder engine available only in the SR5 trim.

4Runner’s SR5 model incorporates a number of innovative standard features including a backup clearance sensor and an eight-speaker stereo with a special tailgate mode. Seventeen-inch wheels, a moonroof, leather upholstery and an upgraded sound system are available as well. For safety, the SR5 incorporates a vast array of 12 airbags, as well as Toyota’s advanced Safety Connect system, which provides everything from emergency response to turn-by-turn directions on command.

The 4Runner’s off-road capable trim, know as the Trail Model, incorporates a number of systems designed to enhance performance off the pavement. Adaptive Terrain Management System (A-TMS), a locking rear differential and a special Crawl Control feature provide exceptional low-end torque, balance and footing on difficult ground, while an attractive hood scoop and a roofrack ensure aggressive style. Inside, a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity and a clever iPod interface give the Trail Model brains to match its brawn.

Last, the top-of-the-line 4Runner Limited model combines exceptional capability with remarkable luxury. Upgraded suspension and full-time four-wheel drive systems provide dynamic capability on tough terrain, but simultaneously ensure a smooth, comfortable ride. Outside, aluminum roof rails, sleek 20-inch wheels, mirror-mounted turn signals and an athletic body kit give the newest 4Runner a brilliantly refined, yet unmistakably commanding presence. Interior luxury is enhanced by the presence of premium-stitched leather, a beautifully tuned sound system and an innovative push-button ignition system. There is no topping the top 4Runner.

Chicken Cheese ball Recipe

1 can of white chicken meat (breast 10 oz)
1 jar of sliced olives ( I used green but you can use black)
2 packages of cream cheese( I used 1 regular and 1 fat free so it was not too overwhelming)
1 package of powdered ranch dressing
1 container of crumbled blue cheese
1 package of pecan pieces ( I chopped mine a little more)

Mix cream cheese and blue cheese together, add ranch dressing, chicken meat and olives and thoroughly mix together.

Shape into a ball and cover in pecan pieces.

For 2010, the Toyota Corolla continues to do and be all of the right things that make it so popular. Its dependability, economy and intelligent design will continue to garner good reviews and dedicated fans.

When it comes to reliable transportation, the Toyota Corolla is still near the top of its class. There are five models to choose from – base, S, LE, XLE and XRS.

With a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) standard in all but the XRS trim, the 2010 Corolla delivers the impressive fuel economy drivers have come to expect, but with a more responsive ride than most compact sedans deliver. EPA estimates put those mileage numbers for the 1.8-liter with a five-speed manual transmission at 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The Corolla’s controls are thoughtfully configured, and its acceleration, handling and overall comfort also are solid.

If you would like something just a little more assertive, Toyota offers the 2010 Corolla with a 2.4-liter DOHC dual-VVT-i four-cylinder engine that develops 158 hp and 162 lb/ft of torque. This upgrade is offered in the sport-themed Corolla XRS model, which also delivers sharper steering and comes with larger wheels and a front strut tower brace for more responsive handling.

The 2010 Toyota Corolla base model comes with standard air conditioning, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power mirrors and an MP3/WMA-capable CD audio system with auxiliary jack. It sits on 15-inch wheels.

Step up to the LE model and you gain power windows and locks, and body-colored exterior mirrors. The S trim offers LE equipment upgrades as available options. However, the Corolla S comes with sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and extra speakers, along with 16-inch steel wheels, underbody spoilers and foglights.

The Corolla XLE gets you the 16-inch wheels and an upgraded stereo, and additional creature comforts including a sliding center armrest, wood-grain trim, electroluminescent gauges, variable intermittent wipers and keyless entry.

The XRS model comes with a larger engine, sport-tuned suspension and steering, 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear deck spoiler and chrome interior trim. Cruise control, which is an option on other models, comes standard on the XRS.

Standard safety equipment on all models of the Corolla includes front-seat side airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags, active head restraints, antilock brakes and the all-important Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC).

Government safety testing showed good results with the Corolla earning four out of five stars for protecting passengers in frontal collisions; even better for side impacts, where the Corolla earned a perfect five stars for protecting front passengers and four stars for rear-seat passengers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Corolla its top score of “Good” for protection in frontal-offset and side-impact collisions.

In keeping with the overall theme, the interior of the 2010 Toyota Corolla is comfortable and convenient. The newly standard telescoping steering wheel––which was not available on prior-year models—provides drivers of all sizes with added comfort. The control layout is intuitive, and the rear seat provides good comfort for both children and adult passengers. The 12.3 cubic foot trunk has a conveniently wide opening, and a double glovebox up front offers additional storage.

Last year in 2008, nearly 10 million Americans were victims of identity theft. In 2007, identity theft totals cost consumers $49.3 billion. As we gear up for Holiday Season 2009, take precautions so that you won't have to spend $500 repairing the damage to your good name, the average amount consumers spend on identity theft restoration. Whether you're hitting the mall or the send key, here's how to shop safely.

At home:
If you're not already monitoring your credit, get started. If someone tries to open an account in your name, or makes charges you didn't authorize, you'll know about it.

Be discrete about leaving personal information around the house. In 16 percent of identity theft cases, the victim knew the person who had appropriated their personal information, and six percent of all victims identified them as a family member or relative!

Copy both sides of all your credit cards so that in case of loss, you'll have all of your account and phone numbers, and can contact card issuers quickly.

Scan credit card statements immediately for any unauthorized purchases. Tell the bank about anything you don't recognize.

At the mall:
Don't be a walking wallet. Not only does carrying a lot of cash make you into a great payoff for pickpockets, but someone "shoulder surfing" can see your PIN at an ATM and then conveniently bump into you—and make off with your cash or your card. Avoid cash worries with a debit card.

Even better, consider credit cards. If someone steals your wallet, you can alert card issuers before you're liable for the charges they might make.

Stay aware of your environment. Don't be distracted by Santa or crying kids when you're in the middle of a crowd.

Be selective about the identity documents you take. If you don't plan on writing checks, you might be safer leaving your checkbook home.

Once you make purchases, safeguard receipts. They might contain credit card numbers or other identity details.

Toyota Engineers New Flower Species to Absorb Emissions at Prius Factories

Toyota has long faced the criticism that the process of manufacturing Priuses has a larger environmental impact than most cars. So the giant automaker came up with what's probably the most bizarre solution imaginable--Toyota genetically engineered two brand new species of flowers to absorb greenhouse gases at Prius manufacturing plants. While, you know, still making the place look pretty.

The flowers have been engineered specifically to absorb nitrogen oxides, and remove heat from the atmosphere. Fast Company explains: "Toyota's flowers are derivatives of cherry sage and gardenia that effectively absorb nitrogen oxides and remove heat from the atmosphere." The absorbed gases makes for lowered surface temperatures around the factory grounds--which means less energy used on cooling the plant. But what's so special about the new flower species?

According to Drive,

The sage derivative's leaves have unique characteristics that absorb harmful gases, while the gardenia's leaves create water vapour in the air, reducing the surface temperature of the factory surrounds and, therefore, reducing the energy needed for cooling, in turn producing less carbon dioxide (CO2).

The new flowers are Toyota's latest attempt to make the oft-criticized Prius manufacturing process less emissions-intensive. And while many are skeptical about how effective they'll actually be, credit should be give to the company for coming up with inventive, unconventional solutions.

It may have looked like a giant Scion dealership, but it wasn’t.

Instead, the Scion-filled parking lot at Knott’s Berry Farm was the result of a special promotion, where Scion owners bearing gifts for a holiday toy drive earned themselves free admission to Haunt.

The event, sponsored by the Toyota-owned carmaker, attracted about 10,000 people and an equal number of toys for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, Knott’s spokeswoman Meghan Gardner said.

Scion also paid for more than 200 Camp Pendleton Marines to attend Haunt.

Some of the Scion owners began showing up to Knott’s as early as noon. Scion has sponsored a yearly Haunt night since 2004.

Prius, One of the Most Affordable Hybrids on the Road Today

Despite gas prices returning to more reasonable levels, interest in fuel-efficient vehicles and particularly hybrids, remains high. Today, consumers have their choice of many models with hybrid capability from sedans to SUVs. But price remains a sticking point for some consumers.

Did you know that the manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) for the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius is $22,000? That's actually $1,806 less than the $23,806 median price of the mid-size sedan segment. Honda's most affordable hybrid, the compact class Honda Insight LX (base model) is priced $1,400 higher (2009 compact car median price is $18,395) and achieves only a modest fuel-economy advantage over other cars in the same segment

Let's do some math based on a Toyota Prius II (base MSRP of $22,000) versus a Honda Insight EX (base MSRP of $21,300). These models represent the most popular configurations among consumers.

Using industry loan averages, including tax and other fees, the Prius has a monthly payment of $435 with $2,400 down. The Insight would carry a monthly payment of $420 using the same math, a $15 savings.

But let's not forget annual fuel costs. Prius offers an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 50 mpg. Insight offers 41 mpg. Driving 15,000 miles a year with an annual fuel cost of $2.62 per gallon, Prius would save owners $172 in fuel costs compared to Insight every year. That equates to $14 a month.

Some easy math and you can see the overall difference is just one single dollar a month between owning a Prius and Insight. So for a buck more, you can get a roomier vehicle, that achieves better gas mileage, offers vehicle stability control, driver's knee air bag, beltless engine, rear disc brakes…and the list goes on.

The 2010 Toyota Tundra is the total package.

The Toyota Tundra has always been a solid performer. For 2010, the Toyota Tundra receives an even more powerful, more fuel-efficient mid-range V8, as well as a new Work Truck Package, new options and other fresh features.

The 2010 Toyota Tundra is in a very competitive category, and its redesign works to keep it running ahead of the pack. This full-size, half-ton pickup is available in Regular Cab, Double Cab and CrewMax models. Regular and Double Cabs can be configured with either a 6.5-foot or eight-foot bed while the CrewMax comes with a 5.5-foot bed.

The 2010 Tundra is available with any of three engines and a choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The base engine is a 4.0-liter DOHC V6 with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). It’s good for 236 hp and 266 lb/ft of torque. There's a new 4.6-liter DOHC 32-valve i-FORCE V8 engine that is designed for more power and fuel-efficiency. This engine develops 310 hp with a hefty 327 lb/ft of torque, and features Toyota’s Acoustically Controlled Induction System (ACIS). The most powerful engine, a 381-hp 5.7-liter DOHC i-FORCE V8, is a no-brainer for those with serious hauling needs. "In the world of half-ton pickups, the Tundra's new 5.7-liter V8 rules, and that rule is absolute," says Car and Driver magazine. In states where it’s available, all 5.7-liter-equipped 4x4s are E-85 FlexFuel capable.

Despite its larger-than-life appearance, the new Tundra makes the zero-to-60 mph run in just 6.9 seconds. It's quick for a pickup, and when tackling steep or rough roads, the truck maintains a consistent speed without resorting to full-throttle. Around town, the Tundra is easy-going and confident.

It's an understatement to say that the Tundra has outstanding hauling capabilities. When properly equipped, the Tundra has a maximum tow rating of 10,500 pounds (Regular Cab, Long Bed 4X4 with the 5.7-liter V8). It has plenty of power and torque. When venturing off-pavement, one of the two off-road packages will enhance handling and dynamics. Tundra’s standard trail-capable tires and skid plates will ease your load over even the toughest roads.

Tundra's interior is comfortable and spacious, and it comes through for driver and passengers with convenient controls, comfortable seating and generous space. Standard amenities include an AM/FM CD player with auxiliary audio jack and four speakers, dual-zone climate control, four-way adjustable driver and passenger seats and a tilt steering wheel. Overall, the 2010 Tundra interior has user-friendly controls, very good quality materials and an organized dash. In the Double Cab, adults can sit and stretch out in the backseat while the CrewMax offers even more space with over 44 inches of legroom in the rear.

One of the highlights of the 2010 Tundra is its newly offered packages. These days, a lot of luxury and convenience can be added. For example, the new Platinum Package, available on CrewMax Limited models, includes features that are more commonly found on high-end luxury sedans. This package features some nice design elements including a chrome lower front bumper, wood-grain interior trim, a power tilt/slide sunroof, 20-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed seats and special doorsill plates and badging. There is also advanced technology to be had including a DVD-based navigation system with backup monitor, and a premium JBL audio system with integrated Bluetooth and satellite radio.

Another new option is the Work Truck Package, available on Regular and Double Cab models. The package includes a work-ready matte-black upper and lower front bumper, matte-black grille surround, a heavy-duty vinyl bench seat, rubber-type flooring and a black instrument panel.

In government crash testing, the Tundra can be expected to score at least as well as last year, if not better. It earned four stars out of five for protection of driver and front passenger in frontal impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2009 Tundra its highest rating of “Good” in frontal-offset testing and side-impact testing. Last year, it also earned a spot on the Insurance Institute's "Top Safety Pick" list.

With its starting MSRP of $23,155, the Tundra is ideal for those who expect to load, tow and go. The 2010 Toyota Tundra with increased power and fuel-efficiency and new creature comforts is an excellent all-around choice.

This was the third new vehicle purchase I have been involved in over the past year. I do not find anything wrong in a Dealer trying to make a few extra bucks by offering additional dealer services or ad-ons. The thing I have a problem with is Dealers taking advantage of uninformed customers by making them feel they do not have the option to decline the offer. One Dealer tried to have my wife sign a form for additional services (i.e. window vin etching, nitrogen in tires, full tank of gas, cost of detailing vehicle, etc.) totaling $700 dollars after we had negotiated the price of the vehicle. Luckily I was able stop her before she signed. Most of these things are a part of the cost of doing business and should not be added to the negotiated price after the fact. Another dealer's financing manager added $300 to the purchase agreement and did not inform us of his action until we question it. It was added in between the other charges such as TT,L. It was for VIN etching. We were told that if we did not accept the charge, they would have to increase the negotiated price. Actually in this case, the price was not negotiated. It was discounted and clearly marked on the vehicle's windshield. It was their advertised price for the vehicle! This action is very unethical in my opinion. I was expecting the same at your dealership and was totally surprised when it did not happen. I was offered additional services by the salesman but at no time did I feel like I was being forced to accept or deceived in any way. From the moment I walked into your showroom and greeted by your receptionist I felt welcomed. Everyone I dealt with was courteous and professional. The entire experience was pleasant. I would definitely purchase another vehicle from Team Toyota. I live near Lafayette and only wish you were a bit closer. I am glad to see that there still are some honest car dealers around. Keep up the good work.
